Hair Restoration
One of the hallmarks of male aging is the changing hair patterns and loss of hair or balding. This can happen prematurely in some men and is often hereditary. While there are a lot of gimmicks advertised that promise to regrow and replace your natural hair, there are certain medications and treatments that work well give you a return of natural, fuller hair.
There are several clinically proven medications that can help to keep existing hair and potentially offer some very mild hair regrowth such as Finasteride and Minoxidil. However, if there is a significant degree of hair loss or thinning then a hair transplant is recommended to create more fullness.
Hair transplants are done in the office under local anesthesia, so you are awake for the procedure but don’t feel anything after the area in numbed. Your donor hair follicles will be harvested and separated into separate units of 1-3 hair follicles known as grafts. A small poke incision is then made in the area where the new hair will be placed, and the grafts inserted. The entire process can take several hours depending on the number of grafts being placed.
Additional Information
-
While the most common place to have hair restoration is on the head to the scalp, hair can also be restored to the beard and upper lip area to create fuller facial hair.
-
Hair from the back and sides of the scalp are much less prone to the hormonal effects that cause hair loss and are the areas harvested for hair transplant. This is done in one of two ways depending on several patient related factors: a strip of hair from the back of the head is removed and sutured closed or small individual hair follicles are removed with a specialized device.
-
Yes! One of the concerns patients have is that the transplanted hair will look fake or like doll hair. This was true of the older techniques of hair transplantation but with newer methods and smaller numbers of hair follicles per graft this concern should be alleviated, and a very natural look achieved once everything has healed.
-
Often times patients will require additional sessions to fill in any areas of sparse growth to create a fuller look. As with any transplant, some of the hair follicles will not survive or re-grow hair so these areas can also be addressed with additional hair follicles.
-
The transplanted hair will grow for approximately 1 month after the procedure then will fall off. This is a natural part of the hair growth cycle after transplantation and is usually concerning to patients however the hair will re-grow over the next several months. It can take up to one year from initial transplantation to see the full effects.
-
The recovery from hair transplantation is generally well tolerated with most patients returning to normal activities within a few days. You may wash the hair 2 days after the procedure and resume strenuous activity after 2 weeks.
-
Hair transplant patients are usually charged per hair graft harvested / transplanted. The cost of a hair transplant typically begins at $3000 and upwards, depending on the number of grafts transferred.
