Brazilian Butt Lift

A Brazilian butt lift or BBL is a gluteal enhancement procedure where the body is contoured and sculpted with liposuction and the harvested fat is then transferred into the butt or gluteal region. This increases the size and improves the shape of the butt while giving a lifted appearance. This has quickly become a very popular procedure for not just female patients but for anyone looking to improve their shape and create a fuller look.

But where does the fat come from?

Any areas of the body that have excess fat (lipodystrophy) can be used to harvest the fat using liposuction. The most common areas are the belly (abdomen), sides/love-handles (flanks), and upper/lower back. However, the neck, arms and thighs can also be used to harvest fat for transfer.

The fat that is harvested is injected into the subcutaneous plane around your gluteal area. This is the space underneath the skin but above the gluteal muscles. Placing the fat in this area helps avoid serious and potentially life-threatening complications while providing a beautiful, sculpted result.

Anyone who has excess adiposity or fat in areas that they would like to improve the contour of, however there cannot be a significant laxity or looseness of the skin or extra, hanging skin in the areas to be contoured. Those who desire an improved gluteal contour, increased fullness, or projection, or filling in of the “hip dips” are also good candidates.  Patients also should not be on a blood thinner, and their weight should be relatively stable.

Additional Information

  • For an outpatient procedure, where you’d go home afterwards, we are limited to removing 5 liters of fat and fluid in one session.

  • This really depends on the laxity of the skin and tissue in the area and your desired goals. In our practice we’ve placed as little as 100cc to fill in small contour deformities to as much as 1100cc to create a larger, fuller butt. In general, more fat then is required is placed because only about 60% of the fat placed will survive so we must compensate for those changes.

  • There is always swelling, soreness and bruising in the treated areas but the degree of each varies from patient to patient. Many people require minimal pain medications and can return to work the next day. You’ll be asked to wear a compression garment over the treated areas to help with swelling and to also encourage the skin to contract to improve the overall contour. For the gluteal area, you’ll be asked to minimize your sitting or lying on your butt for prolonged periods of time for the first 3 weeks with many patients using a “BBL pillow” to take any direct pressure off of the newly placed fat.

  • Generally, the bruising lasts 1-2 weeks with the swelling remaining 6-8 weeks but this varies greatly on the areas treated and volume of fat removed/transferred.

  • From a sculpting standpoint, patients should expect to begin seeing results as early as the 2 week mark but usually notice a marked difference in the 6-8 week timeframe once a majority of the swelling begins to resolve. As for the butt/gluteal area, those changes are immediate but with swelling and some expected fat loss the final results are usually evident at the 6-8 week mark.

  • Yes! But this will depend on the volume of excess fat that remains to be transferred after the first liposuction session.

  • The cost of a Brazilian butt lift ranges from $6500 - $7500 depending on your needs, not including OR, implant or anesthesia fees.

The price of your procedure is largely dependent on the amount of liposuction and size change desired.
